GMRSVP News - Spring 2008

You may have noticed that the symbol of the American Red Cross is no longer among our list of sponsors. Effective July 1, we began to fly the “flag” of the Green Mountain Community Network, and are once again under the competent leadership of Donna Baker, CEO of the Network. We are all pleased to be back with the familiar faces with whom we share a long and successful history. The Red Cross has moved to a new location at 240 North Street, Bennington. We will always be grateful to the American Red Cross for their support as sponsor for RSVP over the past eleven years.

Our three RSVP offices are buzzing along, adding new volunteers, opening new Bone Builder Classes, and searching out new stations so that we can continue to provide our cherished volunteers with a myriad of interesting and fun volunteer opportunities. Our federal sponsor, the Corporation for National and Community Service shared with us their hope that our present volunteers will recruit new volunteers to help the organization grow and serve our communities with even more vigor. There are hundreds of important jobs to be done for non-profits that need help now more than ever. So, reach out to a friend and let them know the rewards of volunteer work. Plant the seeds of kindness, and watch them grow.

Happy Spring to all!

A Volunteer Job With Substance

Guardian Ad Litem - Advocate for children going through the court system. Extensive training and mileage reimbursement is provided. Background check required.

“You go into a courtroom and you see lawyers who know the law and have dozens of kids’ files, or you have social workers who know the regulations and have dozens of kids’ files. But, if a Guardian Ad Litem Volunteer is in the room, you will see they have just one file, and what they know is that one child. And that can make all the difference to a judge’s decision regarding how the rest of that child’s life is going to go.”

Anna Quindlen

The Vermont Guardian Ad Litem (GAL) Program’s mission -
To advocate on behalf of the best interests of children alleged to have been abused, neglected, or are beyond the control of their parents. The goals of the advocacy are to make certain these children and their families receive appropriate services in a timely manner; that case plans and court decisions are based on the child’ s best interests; and every child has a safe, stable, and permanent home within a reasonable period of time.
